Places I Practice

Golden Bear Golf Center
The Golden Bear Golf Center is where I usually practice, since it is conveniently located on the way home from work and is a very nice facility with great instructors. I’ve taken two classes, Fundamentals (beginners class) and Masters (advanced class — not that I’m anywhere close to mastering this game). There is a large grass range with eight target greens (I may never hit a ball far enough to hit the green flag), a short game area with a large green and bunker, two putting greens and a fairway bunker. Golden Bear also has weekly full swing and short game clinics, which I stop in periodically just to have the instructors diagnose my latest swing problem(s). If there was a golf course attached, I would probably not go anywhere else, but, alas, there isn’t.
North Texas Golf Center
The North Texas Golf Center is a practice range with an attached nine-hole, par 27 course with bermuda greens and fairways. This is a good place to work on your short game, as it has a nice chipping green, a large putting green, a short game area with bunkers and lots of targets, and a grass range. On Saturdays, tends to be overrun with junior golfers. Not very crowded on Sunday morning. First come, first serve on the course. I usually hit a large bucket of balls, chip a few balls, hit short wedge shots and putt awhile, then play nine holes, all in about 3 hours.
Hank Haney Golf Ranch — Lewisville, TX
The Hank Haney Golf Ranch is a new facility located in Lewisville, TX just off I-35E. It has a beautiful grass range, complete with four target greens, including bunkers and a water hazard. It also has a very difficult nine-hole course, consisting of five par 3 holes and four par 4 holes. Every hole but the fifth hole has a hazard, either a creek or a pond, and most of the hazards are on the right, the bane of slicers. If you slice, bring lots of balls. My best score on the par 31 course is 40.
