Tiger Wins Bridgestone

Filed under: PGA / LPGA Tour — Joey @ 5:16 pm

Padraig had a one shot lead standing on the 16th tee. Both players put their tee shots into the trees on opposite sides of the course. Tiger punched out first cleanly into the fairway, leaving about 180 yds to the pin. Padraig hit a poor punchout into the rough above a bunker on the left side of the fairway. Tiger hit a world-class 8-iron to about 8 inches, and watched as Padraig self-destructed for a triple.

Tiger cruised the rest of the way for a 4-shot victory, making an easy birdie on the 18th for -12 under 65 to win his 70th tournament.

Padraig v Tiger

Filed under: PGA / LPGA Tour — Joey @ 8:47 am

We’ll find out if Padraig’s killer instinct is strong today playing with Tiger in the final group.

My prediction: If Padraig shoots 67 or better, he wins. 68 will result in a playoff. 69 or higher, Tiger wins. Chance of a spoiler from outside the last group: 1 in 10.

Padraig Harrington leads Tiger Woods at Bridgestone Invitational.

Padraig Harrington kept pouring in birdies as he tried to separate himself from everyone else at the Bridgestone Invitational. He arrived at the 18th green with a three-shot lead, happy with his day's work.

Then he glanced at the leaderboard for the first time Saturday.

Suddenly, that lead felt a little smaller.

His closest challenger was Tiger Woods, the world's No. 1 player and close to unbeatable at Firestone.

“I was surprised, yeah. I didn't know he was up there,” said Harrington, who made four birdies on the back nine for a 3-under 67. “OK, he's in second place. There he is, 7-under par. There you go, three-shot lead. Is that enough? Probably not. I was trying to put as much room between me and the field. But at the end of the day, there's probably never enough room between you and Tiger.

New TWGT Fairway Woods

Filed under: Equipment — Joey @ 7:44 pm

Last week, I built three new Tom Wishon Golf Technology fairway woods. Two were 919THI fairway woods (4- and 7-woods) and a 525GRT 5-wood. All three were built using TWGT 7B2P fairway shafts, stiff flex (now discontinued), and TWGT V-series oversize grips. The 4-wood was built to an overall length of 42 inches, the 5-wood to 41.5 inches, and the 7-wood to 41 inches. All three clubs were swingweighted to D-1. Additionally, all three clubs were hand selected with square clubfaces and to spec loft. The 7B2P fairway shaft is the best I’ve ever used, and unfortunately, has been discontinued. I was lucky to buy a couple of extras for a very good price. I’ve only one left.

I played one round with the 919THI 4- and 7-woods, and they performed as expected (I already have a 919THI 5-wood that I love). The 525GRT 5-wood was built for my practice bag. It is not as forgiving as the 919THI fairway woods, and thus is a good candidate for my practice bag. I’ve practiced with the 525GRT 5-wood, and it performs very well when I put a good swing on the ball, but definitely is a club for the better player.
